How did I start? A Childlike Awe Now story
My story is like a lot of stories in that I was in the midst of a health failure that might have cost me my life. I was at that place where I could no longer continue to survive the painful ego based life that I had created for myself.
How did a Fine Art Practice return me to health?
I was 33 years old. Painting was not going well. Divorced twice. Fired from my lucrative, three piece suit corporate job in the graphic art business. Drinking too much. Mixing alcohol and over the counter pharmaceuticals to silence my emotional pain. Depressed and looking into a whirlpool at the river in front of me. I was at my bottom.
Staring into that whirlpool, brought back a memory of two friends and a meeting that they had taken me to 6 months earlier. What came back to me was an idea that they planted in me at that meeting. That idea was "Childlike Awe Now."
So instead of throwing myself into the river, I followed their creative idea. I had no notion of what would happen, no notion of what it was really about, but I knew I had to create a life other than what I had created up to then.
So I choose a way of living that I had always dreamt of. I started to create a life that Robert Henri called "The Art Spirit", living life as a Fine Artist.
Now 44 years later, having worked hard at striving and living the artist's life that I had dreamt and yearned for, I am a healthy, happy, fulfilled human being who provides a healthier, happier, more fulfilled way of life to my family, my students, my collectors and other human beings. I am not super wealthy but I make a good living. More importantly, I live an alternate wealth life style where I create what I need to have a full life existence. I live this Art Spirit.
I am grateful to the artist's life that I am living and have lived. My kids, granddaughter, partner, friends, collectors and students who have chosen to follow this idea of "Childlike Awe Now" are happy and living the life that they have artfully created for themselves.
The Art Spirit has proven to be a win win for all of us. The Art Spirit is an experience of PLEASURE that surmounts the suffering that life sometimes throws at us.

Henry Bartlett (Barry) Strasbourg-Thompson BFA is a full time working Fine Artist and Fine Art Instructor who walks a Visual Language that satisfies a Seeker’s Path.
Barry & his works travel the way "Childlike Awe Now".

Strasbourg-Thompson (born 1946, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) holds a BFA with Honours from the University of Ottawa, (Art as Healthcare, Contemplative Art), a Studio Skills Certificate from Ontario College of Art & Design University, Toronto, a Post-War Modern Art Certificate from the Museum of Modern Art / Coursera, and currently is studying DESIGN, FORM & MEANING at CalArts | California Institute of the Arts.

Barry owns and operates Strasbourg-Thompson Studio & Art Instruction located on Canada’s beautiful paradise, Vancouver Island at 10519 Knight Road, Chemainus (Saltair) BC. His artwork is included in many private, government and corporate collections such as the Canadian Museum of History (formerly Civilization)-European Collection, the Library of Congress, USA, and the City of Ottawa (Nepean).

While we’re dedicated to producing our own art and community art, we’re also devoted to bringing the artist out in our students and team builders. Offering classes to adults, teens and children in both group settings and private lessons, there’s something for anyone looking to foster the ideas and creativity of their inner Picasso.
